Speaker and session information
Rolf Slaats

Rolf worked as a PhD candidate and PostDoc in the field of stem cell-based cardiac disease modeling, where he spent most of his time in cell culture and molecular biology labs. There, he witnessed first-hand that (medical) research makes a big impact on the environment through excessive waste production and energy use. This bitter aftertaste of science motivated him to start a green team in his research building with like-minded colleagues to start making changes, and it led to him joining the Green Labs NL foundation, which works on sustainable science on a national scale. Ultimately, last year, Rolf was appointed full-time Sustainable Labs Coordinator at the University of Twente, allowing him to fully commit to the cause.

Joke Boonstra

Joke Boonstra is vice-chairman of the Board of Directors of Erasmus MC in Rotterdam.

Joke studied medical biology at the University of Amsterdam and obtained her PhD at the LUMC in the field of transplant immunology. She completed her specialization as a clinical chemist at the LUMC and the Erasmus MC. Until 2010, she was a staff member and deputy department head of the Clinical Chemistry department at Erasmus MC. From 2013 to 2017, Joke was a member of the Board of Directors of the IJsselland Hospital in Capelle aan den IJssel. She also worked there as a clinical chemist, head of the laboratories and director of care. Moreover, she attended INSEAD business school in Fontainebleau and IMD business school in Lausanne.
